Basketball great LeBron James recently gave an interview on Tim Ferriss’ podcast, author of the 4-Hour Workweek, where he offered excellent advice on Leadership. “Once you get into team sports and you see how you are succeeding, you understand it isn’t about you. In order for you to continue to be successful, everyone has to be important and have something to do with the success,” James says.
While James has an impressive list of individual achievements, his team achievements speak to his leadership style. His teams have been in the NBA Finals nine times in his 14-year career, earning three championship rings.
James points to consistency, and elevating others/bringing people along on the journey, as the secret sauces to success. If you are inconsistent, it creates a lack of trust, uncertainty, and doubt in others that is difficult to turn around. Being consistent and following through on your words are important, as it lets people know they can count on you.
Additionally, when you raise people up, praise them, include them, and encourage them, others will begin to view you as a leader. Why? Because people may forget what you say, but they will never forget how you make them feel.
WHAT CAN I DO? It’s simple: be consistent, follow through on your words, and praise/include/encourage others. I know you have it in you, as no one wakes up and says, “I’m going to be a crappy leader today and let people down.” You want to succeed – and you will succeed – if you commit to these three golden rules in 2019 and beyond.
